Cold Weather Vinyl Installations: Do’s, Don’ts & Best Practice
Brrrrrrrr… It’s still cold outside!
Cold weather can significantly impact vinyl performance if best practice isn’t followed.
Low temperatures make vinyl less flexible and slow adhesive activation, increasing the risk of poor print quality, lifting, bubbling, or premature failure. This is especially true for PVC-free vinyl, so extra care should be taken. In fact, we’ve written a guide on common issues with PVC-free vinyl and how to overcome them, so be sure to give that a read too!
Correct storage, proper acclimatisation, and temperature-controlled printing and installation are essential to ensure vinyl performs as intended throughout the winter months.
Below are a few simple Do’s & Don’ts designed to help prevent costly reprints, reduce downtime, and ensure smooth vinyl application in cold weather.
Do’s
- Store vinyl indoors at a consistent temperature (ideally 18–22°C)
- Allow vinyl to acclimatise for at least 24 hours before printing or installation
- Print in a temperature-controlled environment to ensure proper ink adhesion
- Ensure prints are fully cured before laminating
- Install vinyl within the recommended temperature range (typically above 10°C)
- Warm both the substrate and vinyl until touch-warm
- Apply firm pressure and post-heat edges to activate the adhesive fully
Don’ts
- Don’t store vinyl in cold vans, garages, or unheated warehouses
- Don’t print or laminate vinyl while it’s still cold
- Don’t install vinyl straight from a cold environment
- Don’t attempt outdoor installations in freezing or near-freezing temperatures
- Don’t skip acclimatisation; rushing can lead to failure
- Don’t assume winter conditions won’t affect performance
